PROJECTS

The Terra&AcquaTech Laboratory obtained the EU, national and regional co-financing of several industrial research projects.

The project aims to enhance marine biological resources within a circular economy framework, with the goal of obtaining products of interest for the food and industrial sectors, as well as developing new farming techniques and technological processes for the processing of seaweed.
The project involves the participation of private companies in the agri-food supply chain in the formulation of prototypes and the assessment of the industrial potential of seaweed extracts and processed products.

The proposal aims to reduce the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content in digestates (biomass produced by anaerobic digesters), encompassing both agricultural digestates derived from agricultural and agro-industrial biomass and municipal digestates derived from the anaerobic digestion of urban organic fractions. The objectives are to recover fertilizing elements and to mitigate atmospheric emissions of ammonia, methane, and nitrous oxide, both during storage and during agronomic application.

The project, which is entirely located in the FLAG area of the Emilia Romagna Coast, aims at fostering the productive recovery of two native species of bivalves, the Adriatic flat oyster Ostrea edulis and the clam Tapes decussatus, through innovative and more eco-sustainable hatchery management solutions.

The project consists of multiple actions that synergistically contribute to increasing the productivity and sustainability of hatcheries such as: the use of sensors to control water quality parameters; the formulation and use of feed obtained from macroalgae for oyster and clam pre-fattening; the introduction of filtering systems obtained from waste materials to improve water quality. The project, co-ordinated by the University of Ferrara, sees the involvement of three other technical-scientific organisations (Istituto Delta Ferrara, Naturedulis Goro, Fondazione S. Giuseppe CFP CESTA), where Naturedulis is also the Aquaculture Enterprise that owns the hatchery.

Initiative implemented within the framework of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 - Type of operation 16.1.01 - Operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership: Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability - Focus Area 3A - Improving the competitiveness of primary producers by better integrating them into the agrifood supply chain through quality schemes, the creation of added value for agricultural products, the promotion of products in local markets, short supply chains, producer associations and organisations and interprofessional organisations.

The project is intended to be a driving force and technological innovation tool for the valorisation of by-products of the agro-food chain for the production of substances with high added value (second-generation valorisation) with spin-offs in the phytosanitary and food context (nutraceuticals and ingredients) by exploiting low environmental impact technologies. With a view to an integrated strategy for the valorisation of by-products in the agro-food sector, the project also proposes the complete characterisation of extraction residues for their effective addressing to the energy sector (first-generation valorisation).

The general objective of the project is to improve the management of the initial and final phases of the entire shellfish production cycle, from cradle to grave: the management of juveniles and production residues. On the one hand, the project intends to carry out a study aimed at identifying and mapping possible nursery areas for the veraceous clam (Venerupis spp.) associated with the Sacca di Goro, and on the other hand, the study of how to recover production waste, in a circular economy perspective, envisaging the recovery and re-use of sea waste, in particular bivalve mollusc shells from the shellfish production chain.

Scalable Operational Protocols for Precision Agriculture (POSITIVE)

The aim of the project is to make available on a regional scale indices of agronomic interest obtained by integrating satellite images with data collected on the ground, through a concretely usable IT infrastructure for precision irrigation and fertigation. POSITIVE is a project financed by the Emilia-Romagna POR FESR (2014-2020), among the strategic industrial research projects addressing the priority areas of the Intelligent Specialisation Strategy.

SmartAgriHubs is a European project aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of the European agri-food sector. The project consists of 28 digital innovation experiments in agriculture and aquaculture, supported by Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) from 9 regional clusters of European Member States. At the same time, SmartAgriHubs aims to improve the quality of services of DIHs so that digital innovations can be widely disseminated and adopted by European farmers. In particular, the Ferrara unit deals with digital innovation in the aquaculture sector.
